Who is responsible for your spiritual blindness? This is a very serious question. The cause of some people's ignorance is the honest lack of instruction, knowledge and opportunity to learn and know. However, the cause of some other people's spiritual blindness is their personal failure to walk in the light of truth which has at some point been revealed to them and they rejected the light because of some external influence or evil lust. Have you known the truth and then rejected it? Has the Holy Spirit spoken to your heart and mind and you refused to listen? People have often rejected truth because they were being taught a false doctrine. Even though the Holy Spirit warned them to refuse the teaching of a false doctrine, they accepted it and failed to heed the warning of the Holy Spirit. Who is responsible for your spiritual blindness?
1 Corinthians 2:12-14
1 Corinthians 2:12-14
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
People who are spiritually blind will not believe they are blind. They say they can see. They have deceived themselves by thinking they are saved and in fellowship with Jesus Christ while they are still committing sin. We blow the trumpet of truth in hopes that the message of holiness will wake them up to the reality of their blindness.
39 And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40 And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
When people are religiously blind, they say they see and understand things which they do not see and understand. But because they say they see and are determined to believe what they want to believe, Jesus told them that their sin is imputed to them and they are guilty. They will not walk in the light of truth; therefore, they are walking in darkness. If you are walking in darkness and you insist you are walking in light; then you will be judged responsible for your error. Your ignorance of the truth will not be an acceptable excuse, because you rejected the light of truth and would not obey truth.
Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
Jesus is the light of the world. We have His words and the words of His apostles to teach us the true light. If we reject the light of truth, then we are sinners.
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
There are certain consequences for walking in darkness. People who walk in darkness stumble and do not know what they stumble over. They do not understand and do not know that they do not understand. They are confused and do not know that they are confused.
15 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:
16 Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways.
God has allowed nations of people to walk in the darkness of their own choosing. They like their way better than God's way. God will let you do what you want to do. But there will be consequences for choosing to walk in the darkness of your way.
1 John 1:5-2:1
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Chapter 2, Verse 1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Sinners walk in darkness. Saints walk in light. Sinners are children of the night. Saints are children of the day. Every person is either a child of light or a child of darkness. Every person makes the choice of which spiritual power will rule in their life, either Christ or Satan. The default is Satan. If you neglect to submit to Jesus Christ, Satan is your master. There is no neutral ground.
11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Paul did not say, “Make no provision for the flesh.” He qualified and explained that statement by adding “to fulfill the lusts thereof.” To lust after something is to have an excessive desire which leads to disobedience of a righteous principle. The children of light must not make provisions for the flesh in an excessive manner. We must exercise temperance in all things.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
Children of light must separate themselves from the worldly conduct of the children of darkness. We do not live in sin to the satisfaction of the flesh. We do not allow addictions and excesses in our daily life. We have power over the flesh so that we can live obedient to our Lord Jesus Christ.
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
The religious Jews who crucified Jesus Christ were spiritually blind to the great sin they were committing. They knew they were doing wrong, but they did not know the fullness of the terrible thing they were doing. They were spiritually blind to the magnitude and severity of their sin. People who walk in the darkness of sin, do not realize the great sinfulness of their conduct; nor do they rightly consider the dire and eternal consequence of their sins.
20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.
22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.
24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.
What has Jesus done in your life to take away your excuse for sin?
Have you seen enough light of truth to take away your excuse for sin?
Have you heard enough preaching of truth to make you responsible for your conduct and attitudes?
Have you chosen to walk in the light of truth; or, have you chosen to close your eyes to the truth?
God knows the thoughts and intents of your heart. If you willfully disobey God, he will send you a strong delusion and you will continue to walk in darkness and be eternally lost.
2 Thessalonians 2:11-12
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Satan is a liar. If you believe Satan instead of believing the truth, God will send you a strong delusion and you will believe a lie and be lost.
Believe God and let Him heal your spiritual blindness so you can see and know and understand the light of truth.
